YouTube producer sues Redmond gun store for breach of contract

A YouTube video creator based in Texas is suing the owner of a local gun shop in Redmond, California, for $7.6 million. The suit alleges that the shop violated the terms of a contract and purposefully hurt the reputation of the creator's YouTube Channel. The contract between the two parties stated that the gun store was to pay 3 cents to the creator for every view of a video featuring guns being fired at point-blank range.

The gun store claims that they don't owe the video producer any money because the sponsored video was unlisted. They also claim that the creator didn't make it known that YouTube had changed their policy regarding content with guns. The creator claims that the gun store simply wasn't prepared to pay the true costs of sponsorship. The YouTube channel hosting the video has more than 650,000 subscribers and dozens of videos featuring various firearms.

In addition, the creator claims that the gun store maliciously attacked the creator's YouTube videos through a thumbs-down rating campaign. The creator also claims that the sponsored video was publicly listed and available through normal search on the YouTube platform. The video allegedly received millions of views during this time, creating more than $50,000 in charges for the gun store.

Contract disputes between companies can be highly complex. It is wise for each party involved to have legal representation whether they're suing, counter suing or simply negotiating. Lack of counsel on the part of the plaintiff or defendant might result in a big financial burden as well as a loss of reputation. A company may be able to strengthen its position in contract disputes by hiring a business lawyer to draft or review documents before they're signed.
