13 years on, tech companies settle

Technology company Rambus has been aggressively pursuing other memory chip companies for the past 14 years and recently came to a settlement with another company. Following an extensive business litigation case, an agreement was reached providing that Micron Technology will pay $280 million over the next seven years.

Under the agreement, payments will be made every quarter to Rambus after settling the patent and antitrust claims that were part of the case. This is apparently the final lawsuit Rambus will be pursuing, having recently settled with another company for $12 million per quarter. The parts that have been under fire are used in various tech products, including iPhones and iPads, as well as Hitachi and Mitsubishi memory chips. Any one of these products would create incredible revenue in today’s market, but Rambus has shrewdly managed their company to become the top of the food chain.

Often we think of business law or contract disputes in terms of one business to another. In this case, though, Rambus has taken on numerous companies in order to protect their products. It was not a case of merger or acquisition, but rather a way to ensure that their product and their business would be protected by legal means. Experienced business law attorneys provide such services.

Issues within companies, such as disagreements between shareholders, are common and can lead to business or corporate litigation cases. A situation like that would be more common than the Rambus cases, but the strategies involved in corporate law are important to protect a business – no matter the product or size.
